One Piece Film: Red passed another impressive box office milestone, and mangaka Eiichiro Oda has created a new artwork to celebrate.
According to Comic Natalie, the latest movie in the iconic pirate anime franchise has earned 15 billion yen (roughly $103 million) within only 46 days since its release. Film Red currently stands as the most profitable movie in One Piece franchise and the seventh highest-grossing anime movie of all time, having already surpassed Jujutsu Kaisen 0 and Weathering With You; it is also presently the 13th highest-earning film of any kind in Japan’s history. To commemorate the success, Oda created a wanted poster for Uta, the movie’s central character.
The fifteenth film in the One Piece franchise, Film Red sees the Straw Hat Pirates journey to the Island of Music and meet up with Luffy’s childhood friend Uta, who is a beautiful songstress who wishes to combat suffering and pain with the power of music and the estranged daughter of none other than Red-Haired Shanks. Two prequel episodes were released shortly after the movie’s debut, giving viewers a look into the three characters’ connected history.
One Piece Film: Red Will Release Domestically in November
Crunchyroll recently revealed when Film Red would premiere in Western markets. The movie hits theaters in New Zealand and Australia on Nov. 3 and then makes its epic debut in the United States and Canada the following day. Austrian and German anime fans will be able to see Film Red beginning Oct. 13.
Oda began publishing his beloved One Piece manga in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump in 1997; the series has produced well-over 1,000 individual chapters. The narrative follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy, a young pirate captain with a body made of out rubber, and his wacky crew, which includes a talking reindeer, a directionally challenged swordsman and an archeologist who can manifest additional limbs, as the sail the Grand Line in search for the titular treasure. With the manga finally entering its final major story arc, many fans have begun speculating about who will be Luffy’s final opponent. While some theories point to Shanks, others feature characters like Admiral Akainu, Buggy the Clown and Blackbeard. With over 516 million copies of One Piece in circulation around the world, Oda’s series is undoubtedly the best-selling manga of all time.
